Open access notables An intensification of surface Earth’s energy imbalance since the late 20 th century , Li et al., Communications Earth & Environment: Tracking the energy balance of the Earth system is a key method for studying the contribution of human activities to climate change. However, accurately estimating the surface energy balance has long been a challenge, primarily due to uncertainties that dwarf the energy flux changes induced and a lack of precise observational data at the surface. We have employed the Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) method, integrating it with recent developments in surface solar radiation observational data, to refine the ensemble of CMIP6 model outputs. This has resulted in an enhanced estimation of Surface Earth...

Are we heading into an ‘ice age’? The planet has been getting warmer since the Industrial Revolution, not colder. Historically, ice ages have followed changes in the Earth’s relationship to the sun. Natural cycles affect the tilt of Earth’s axis and its orbit around the sun. As Earth’s axis becomes less tilted, and its orbit more elliptical, it receives less solar radiation. The best option, according to scientists who developed a climate-friendly food plan several years ago, is to eat more vegetables, legumes and whole grains, and cut back on meat and dairy. Tackling Climate and Nature Together in 2025 shannon.paton@… Wed, 12/18/2024 - 09:10 Few issues are more enmeshed than climate and nature. Scientists are increasingly learning how biodiversity loss and climate change compound and reinforce each other. For example, deforestation releases greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change, spurring wildfires and forest dieback that then release more emissions and cause further warming. It’s a vicious cycle that both accelerates and amplifies the extreme heat, drought, flooding and other impacts endangering communities around the world. Yet despite their inexorable connection, policymaking for climate and for nature still largely operate in separate spheres. Just this year, the world saw major international summits...

Disproportionate placement of devices leaves communities of color less protected from dangerous pollutants The Environmental Protection Agency ’s air quality monitors are disproportionately positioned in whiter neighborhoods in the US, leaving communities of color less protected from dangerous pollutants like particulate matter, ozone, nitrous dioxide and lead, among others, new research finds. Policy and actions the EPA takes to reduce pollution are developed from the monitors’ readings, and communities of color are broadly more likely to be near major polluters. The findings raise questions about whether the agency has enough monitors installed, is properly placing them, and whether conclusions about the safety of the air in some areas are sound.
